Yes Virginia, there is hope for the Meridian Police Department

Meridian Police Department (1975, Chris Risher)

OK preservationists, finish up those letters to Santa and get your comments in to the Mississippi Department of Archives and History in support of Mississippi Landmark status for the Meridian Police Department.  The salient facts:

  • The building is a watershed of modernist design by our own Chris Risher, Sr.
  • It is in good condition.
  • There is no solid plan to rebuild on this site, only a vague reference to a possible hotel and conference center, so there is no reason to rush into demolition without considering other options.
  • The Mississippi Heritage Trust, Mississippi Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, and the MSU School of Architecture have offered to assist the City of Meridian in discovering a bright new future for this modernist gem.

Please address your comments to Katherine Anderson with the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, via snail mail at P.O. Box 571, Jackson, MS 39205 or email at kanderson@mdah.state.ms.us.

Perhaps, in addition to asking Santa for a copy of Modern Architecture Since 1900 by William J. R. Curtis (erudite) and tickets to the Mad Mod Affair in Eastover in February (swanky), you could include a plea for a strong preservation ethic for Mississippi?

  1. What is the deadline when letters have to be in?

Everyone please contact MDAH & the City of Meridian if you wish to see the building saved. Hope cannot be the only strategy.
