Now that Preservation in Mississippi has been around a while, here’s an easy compendium of the various series known and loved by MissPresers.
- Abandoned Mississippi: Highlighting the abandoned but historic places in the state, especially those still able to be repaired and saved.
- Architects/Builders Pics: Originally meant to highlight the rare photographs of architects and builders we came across in our research, this series has now evolved to include all sorts of fascinating tidbits about the men who designed and built the buildings we love, including their gravestones.
- Architectural Word of the Week: Improving our building vocabulary helps us better understand the places we care about and also helps us articulate better arguments for their preservation.
- Book Quotes: Excerpts and discussion of books about preservation, architectural history, and Mississippi architecture.
- Friday is a Gas: An occasional friday series that takes a fun look at the evolution of the gas station with the goal of considering the role they played in the development of 20th century Mississippi.
- From the Archives: Occasional multi-part series highlighting important but usually unpublished or rare documents about Mississippi’s architecture found in libraries or archives.
- Historic Hotels: An occasional series about the historic hotels of Mississippi, some lost, some grandly restored, some still waiting.
- Lost Mississippi: Reminding readers of historic places lost over the years due to fire, hurricanes, tornadoes, demolition, or simple neglect.
- Name This Place: Week-long contests that bring out the competitive juices of MissPres readers, in which the reader who correctly identifies the most historic places wins the coveted title “Mississippi Preservationist Extraordinaire.”
- To . . . and Back Again: An occasional series of travel logs about trips around our interesting state.
- Vacation Postcards: A tradition whenever MissPres goes on vacation: sending back postcards from Mississippi’s early tourist era, the middle of the twentieth century.
Hi to All, my wife and I are looking at a Historic home in Aberdeen that is beautiful but we need to talk to someone about Historic homes and the guidelines for maintaining them . Is there a person that can help us with this ? I can’t find anything on the website that talks about residential homes in Aberdeen. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Preservation in Mississippi is not an official governmental agency or non-profit entity. It advocates learning about and preserving Mississippi’s historic buildings and sites. For information about Aberdeen, its historic districts, and its preservation guidelines, you should contact the City of Aberdeen. Their website is cityofaberdeenms.com. There is also a local preservation organization in Aberdeen, Save Aberdeen Landmarks. Under the leadership of Dwight Stevens, it has worked to preserve Aberdeen’s historic buildings. Their website is at http://saveaberdeenlandmarks.org/index.html. Aberdeen is an important, historic small town that has been the focus of several posts here on Preservation in Mississippi. Speaking for the site’s other authors, I know I am always glad to hear about people who wish to restore and preserve historic buildings there and elsewhere throughout Mississippi.
