Roll Call of Landmarks Lost to Katrina

This coming Saturday will be the fourth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina’s destructive rage across Mississippi’s Coast. In the spirit of the newspaper clipping re-printed here for the Camille anniversary, I’ll begin this week of remembrance with a listing of Mississippi’s landmarks that have been confirmed as destroyed during Katrina or demolished afterward.

The list confirms what the Mississippi Heritage Trust website states about Katrina:

When Hurricane Katrina’s high winds and massive storm surge slammed into Mississippi’s Gulf Coast on August 29, 2005, many of the Coast’s most enduring landmarks disappeared.  Gracious beachfront mansions, simple Creole cottages, bungalows, and shotgun houses—significant historic sites and private homes—the storm spared none of them.  Even the downtown commercial centers of Waveland, Bay St. Louis, Pass Christian, Gulfport, and Pascagoula were devastated by the raging flood waters.  Several blocks on the high ground in Bay St. Louis and in Pass Christian were all that was left of the grand miles-long stretch of historic houses that once defined the Mississippi Coast.

The list was compiled by teams of surveyors from the Mississippi Department of Archives and History and the Mississippi Heritage Trust in September and October 2005 and has been kept as updated as possible when demolitions have occurred. Those destroyed outright in Katrina are in black, those demolished later are in red. The list only includes those buildings listed on the National Register either as individual buildings or as part of a historic district. Hundreds of other historic buildings were destroyed that weren’t listed on the National Register.

  1. Sad loss. The list is long.
I am in hopes the new structures are built with great architectural character not vinyl cookiecutter roofs overhead.

    • I share your hope that new landmarks will take the place of the old. So far, a few have, I think mostly in Pass Christian where the Dixie White House has actually been reconstructed after a fire took it in th 1970s. But I also see insubstantial and vinyl-clad houses popping up, or houses that look like they could have been built in Any Suburb, USA.

Overall though, lots and lots of vacant lots with For Sale signs.

  2. I wonder if there is a chance that the Louis Sullivan House could be reconstructed? Has there been any discussion of this? Also, the Farnsworth Summer House in Pascagoula makes me wonder if this is the same family who later built Mies’ Farnsworth House in Illinois.

    • I don’t know that anyone has brought up reconstruction of the Sullivan House. There is a major restoration of the Charnley House next door, which did survive but essentially had its back broken when the front half got lifted up off its foundation and set back down. That project has cost over a million dollars.

That’s a really interesting thought about the Farnsworth–it actually has never occured to me, but it’s definitely worth checking into!

  3. I have been in high hopes that there would be a book published with all of the beautiful homes and buildings that were lost due to Katrina. Do you know if anything like that has been done or planned for the future?
