Roadside Mississippi: Homewood Manor, Jackson

This former tourist court still stands as a trailer park on North State Street, up past Broadmoor and south of Cedars of Lebanon. Its cottages are gone, but a house that may be a remodeled version of the old 1940s house seen here survives. After driving past this site many times over the years, I found this postcard on eBay, and it was an ah-ha moment. Even later, I came across this brief 1957 article in the old Northside Reporter.

HOMEWOOD MANOR TOURIST COURT, 1 1/2 Miles N. City Limits--Highway 51, Jackson, Mississippi. Midway Between Memphis and New Orleans. Among the South's Finest. Tourist Accommodations At Reasonable Rates. Postmarked 1946.

MEET YOUR NEIGHBORS

This week we introduce to you the Morris Melvins as your Merchant of the Week.

The Melvins own and operate the HOMEWOOD MANOR, 5330 North State Street. The tourist court and trailer park is situated on a beautiful tree shaded 20 acre tract of land. There are 25 units in all. Some of these are equipped to take car of overnight guests and others are furnished for light housekeeping for the convenience of those who desire to “spend a while” in our city. All are attractively decorated under the supervision of Mrs. Melvin. In addition to these units there is space for 40 trailers . . . And a corral for Dan. They first bought the court in 1945. Mr. Melvin was born in Moss point, Mississippi, but moved to this part of the state in 1927. He graduated from Clinton High School and attended Mississippi State College and Mississippi College. He served in the Air Force during the Second World War. Although Mrs. Melvin (Marguerite) was born in Little Rock, Arkansas, she has lived in Jackson since she was one year of age. She graduated from Central High School and Jackson Commercial Business College. Mr. Melvin belongs to the Benoit Hunting Club. Other than hunting he especially enjoys Deep Sea Fishing. Mrs. Melvin’s hobby is working with flowers and gardening. She is a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church and a member of the Altar Guild. The Melvins have two teen-age daughters: Jo Ann, a student at Murrah and Babs, a student at Bailey Junior High. “Dan,” who also make his home on the grounds of the Homewood Manor . . . is a jet black Tennessee Walker and a special pet of Babs.

  1. I do not think that is the same building. If so it would have been very heavily remodeled. Looking at this 1960 aerial of the N State Street Homewood site it appears that the postcard view was the building in front of the pool. Don’t know when it was demolished but the foundation was visible in the 2002 aerial.

  2. I believe you’re right about it not being the original building. The wood 6/6 windows made me think it might but those could be re-used.

    • I think that the standing building is historic and dates to the time of the court, its just not the building in the postcard. Looking at the 1960 aerial and the layout of the cabins and streets, the extant building was just north of the structure in the postcard. The postcard structure was immediately west of the pool.

  3. I passed by Homewood every day when I lived and worked in Jackson. I always thought it was the nicest trailer park ever. I had no idea about its past life. Very interesting.
