MissPres is on vacation this week, but we’re sending postcards back from Mississippi’s past.

Looks kind of like the Pentagon, doesn’t it? Constructed in 1962, and grand opening January 20, 1963, the design was called a “flared U.” In addition to the features named above, it also had an “authorized heliport”. The Columbus Brick Company supplied 180,000 “simulated used brick” and it was designed by architect William W. Bond and Associates.
An announcement in April 2001 reported it would become the Quality Hotel Center, and by October 2001, it was known as the Jackson Southwest Hotel. It has been vacant since 2006 and has been the scene of a fire twice in the last 2 years. Anyone see what’s coming next?
Still, what an neat looking facility when it debuted in 1962!

I hear there are efforts to renovate and reuse the complex, but nothing is underway yet. Still a cool place with good bones for someone with the eye to see it.

So sad what that section of Jackson has become. As a SoJack boy, I remember when this place was elegant and classy in the 1970’s.
