Hop On The Bus For A Mad Mod Affair In The Delta

Mississippi Heritage Trust

Mad Mod Affair Delta

Saturday, April 2

9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.-Architectural Tour of the Delta

$25 a person

Architects in the mid-twentieth century defied tradition and experimented with color, form and materials to create the many fun, unusual and occasionally outlandish houses, banks, dry cleaners, offices and schools that make up Mississippi’s historic modernist landscape. The Delta is home to many such modernist gems that are now considered the “new historic.” Our fun and informative tour, led by John Beard, AIA, will showcase the creative spirit that is embodied in modernism in true Delta style. Stops will include visits with people who have worked hard to save and maintain these special places, like Tommy Verdell with the Valley, architect Charles Bowman, Cheryl Taylor with the Museum of the Delta, David O’Bryan with Delta Electric and Myrna Smith-Thompson with the Knights and Daughters of Tabor.  Noted photographer Trip Farris will document the places on our tour, while David Lewis will film the stories of saving place to add to MS MOD.  Stops will include:

Greenwood-Wade, Delta Electric and Delta Electric Solar Facility, Museum of the Delta

Itta Bena-Mississippi Valley State University

Indianola-Wade, Delta Electric

Cleveland-Delta State University

Mound Bayou-Taborian Hospital

Tour will start and end at the Clarksdale Visitors Station, 300 Issaquena Avenue. Transportation, lunch and plenty of snacks are provided.

6:00 pm – 9:00 pm-Reception and Tour of Francine and Bill Luckett’s House, Clarksdale

$50 a person

Fay Jones of Fayetteville, Arkansas, studied under the great Frank Lloyd Wright, and eventually ascended to heights rivaling his master. Jones became one of the most acclaimed and significant architects of the late twentieth century. The Luckett home, originally built in 1973 for the McNamee family, is one of Jones most spectacular prairie-style residences, with a vast array of sunken spaces, wood screens and expanses of glass looking out to intimate patios and a stunning pool area and guest-house. Guest will enjoy cocktails, refreshments by renowned chef Elizabeth Heiskell and a solo by sultry Ora Reed while touring the home and mingling with other lovers of mod.

The Luckett House is located at 333 Westover Drive, Clarksdale.

  1. Delighted that the two Wades have earned appropriated admiration. They enthralled me when I was a teen traveling along Highway 82 on trips to see relatives.
