The J C Penney store in Wellston was great. We grew up about a little over a mile away. On really hot days we would take the bus to the Wellston Loop and go to the Penney store to cool off. It was one of the first stores in the area to be air conditioned in a time when few people had air conditioning in their homes. It felt so good, we would hang around for hours. The trouble was it felt twice as hot when we finally left the store and walked out onto the street.

My Dad and Mom were raised in neighborhood between Hodiamont Tracks and Union Blvd. (West and East) and Page Ave.and Natural Bridge. Multiple locations (No. and So) They moved to Maryland Heights in 1946—but always returned to Wellston to shop and visit relatives who still lived there. JC Penneys was our main shopping store having six kids. The store was modern and had many items for bigger families back in those days. All through my adult life JC Penneys was the store for me—–and the store in Wellston still my favorite. Martin Luther King Dr. (called Easton Ave. then) was one of the busiest shopping areas in the entire Midwest. It’s good to see the old store still standing!
Wellston was a popular shopping district while I was growing up in the 1950’s.

I worked there in 1967 for a few months before being drafted. Fond memories of the bustling business district.
