“Dunleith,” Natchez

Dunleith, Natchez – (1856-57) (National Historic Landmark) One of only three antebellum houses constructed in Mississippi with a peripteral colonnade (Windsor was one of the others). Maryland-born builder John Crothers constructed Dunleith (originally called Routhland) for Charles Dahlgren. Located at the center of a landscaped forty-acre site, Dunleith is the image of a Classical temple transformed into a mansion surrounded by twenty-six Tuscan columns. Due to the peripteral colonnade and the floor-length windows, the first story can merge with the surrounding outdoor landscape, which includes many antebellum outbuildings.

  1. John, as I understand it, was a cousin most likely of my gggrandfather, Abner Callington Crothers. There was a plaque noting John as the builder, but last time I visited I was unable to find it. It’s quite an impressive construction.

    • Hi Frank! I’m curious if you’re talking about Abner Crothers who married Mary Fuller. If so, we are cousins! Abner Crothers was my fourth great grandfather. If this is correct, I’d love to connect and get some insight regarding who Abner’s mother and father were. I can’t find a birth record for him anywhere.
