Maybe you’ve heard about the awesome engineering marvel right here in Jackson, the Mississippi River Basin Model, built with German POW labor and designed to help the U.S. Corps of Engineers model various flooding scenarios.
Way back at the beginning of this blog, I ran a little post about the model’s abandoned and overgrown condition since it was abandoned by the Corps a couple of decades ago. More recently, I noted a cool video by Atlas Obscura and wondered if anyone was interested in starting a cleanup effort. Well, the answer was yes, and lickety split, a Friends of the Mississippi River Basin Model formed earlier this year. Tomorrow, they’ll host their second cleanup day on the model, whose vastness needs to be experienced to be understood. If you’ve never had the pleasure, and if you have nothing else to do besides lounge around the house, why not grab some gloves and head down to McRaven Road to help recover this Mississippi Landmark?

I have wanted to see the Mississippi River Basin Model ever since you first posted about it. Alas, tomorrow, I head for Texas for a week of mucking the hay barn and other fun stuff. I will be “cleaning” in solidarity. :)
