I adore corner entrances, aka canted, beveled, angled. Something about them does, always has, always will, appeal to me. Quick, pop quiz: Where are the two entrances featured above? It’s nearing the end of the year, so here is a little journey back through time to appreciate some of the Mississippi buildings with corner entrances that have caught my eye.
And, the most beautiful corner entrance of them all in Mississippi!

Thoroughly enjoyed the slideshow photos! Ding!!! I just figured out where “cattycorner” or “kittycorner” came from. Cattycorner is equal to chesterdrawers. LOL :-)

Ha! You may be right about cattycorner! Never thought of it. The entrance is to the world-famous Square Books on the Oxford square.

The corner of the Bank of Tupelo used to have a door there I think…well, maybe not. It’s been a while. LOL.

The Corner Shoe Store is still in business but it has moved to the West Main Shopping Center. It is a GREAT locally owned shoe store!

“They” covered up the turrett (sp?) corner with some sort of panels for a while but later took it off and “restored” the corner.

The Bank of Tupelo later became the Bank of Mississippi and later it became BancorpSouth. BancorpSouth is now headquartered in a modern building one block south of the original building. The building pictured here was another business before the bank was there.

The Biloxi Masonic Temple you so deftly identified over on S:RS as being authored by P J Krouse has a nice canted corner entrance.
And the old Merchants Bank in Bay St. Louis had a beautiful granite column supporting the second floor above its canted corner entrance.

It was built in 1962 as a commercial building from what I could find. Maybe a medical clinic? Using the street address, It has been used as a restaurant, for T & A Barbeque and Lil C’s PoBoy Sandwich shop, and as a wholesale auto dealership. It does not show up in the HRI database.

Northeast Mississippi is represented by the Waldron Building in downtown Corinth. It beats all of these other buildings with its two-story corner turret perched on a single limestone column.

Beauregard’s postcard reminded me that I mixed-up the two buildings. It is the B. F. Liddon Building that I was describing in my earlier comment. The Liddon Building is three stories of rusticated ashlar limestone, with a two-story corner turret resting on a limestone column. The Liddon Building still exists at the corner of Cruise and Franklin Streets. The Hotel Waldron was across the street from the Alcorn County Courthouse at the corner of Waldron and Taylor Streets, where that mess of a Regions Bank now sits.

I wish I was walking into Square Books right now! This has made me realize what attracted me to the King Ranch Store in Kingsville, Texas (I KNOW its not in Mississippi, but) was the corner entrance! Now I’m on the lookout! Love all these comments, too!

I’ve been reading through the comments after a long day of no internet access, hoping that someone was going to guess your two mystery buildings. I even cheated and searched for Tyson in the MDAH HIstoric Resources Database–nothing! Since I’m less familiar with the northeast section of the state, I’m guessing these are up your way, but otherwise, I’m still waiting for someone to tell me where these two interesting corner entrances with the weird rusticated stone columns are?

Well, it looks like someone did not pay attention during the slide show! :) Tyson Drugs (on the left) is in Holly Springs (unknown what the original building was) and the second is now Byhalia Drug, former Byhalia Bank.

Well no wonder nobody guessed, they already all knew the answer! I am abashed and clearly need to get up to Marshall County so I’ll know these myself. :-)

Aren’t the stone columns great? Stone construction in South Mississippi comes across (to me anyways) as some mythical and rare orient spice. So I am always intrigued to see it used.

Great post and can’t argue about Square Books, but have to confess my favorite such entrance is The Mayflower Café in Jackson. If I could figure out how to paste or upload a picture, I would do so.

I second that motion about Mayflower, and it has the best redfish north of Hattiesburg, so double credit! In fact, I love it so much, I wrote one of the first posts on MissPres about it way back in February 2009.
