2013 National Trust Planning Grants Available for Main Street Communities

Good planning before a bricks and mortar preservation project will save time and money and usually result in a better quality project.  The grants below are for this planning phase.  If your town is a Main Street community you might be interested in following up on these National Trust’s grant programs.

  • Cynthia Woods Mitchell Fund for Historic Interiors, awarding grants for the planning phases of interior restoration projects. Grants range from $2,500 to $10,000 and require a dollar-for-dollar match.
  • Hart Family Fund for Small Towns, providing preservation planning and education grants to projects taking place in communities of fewer than 5,000 people. Grants range from $2,500 to $10,000 and require a dollar-for-dollar match.
  • Johanna Favrot Fund for Historic Preservation, funding projects that foster an appreciation of our nation’s diverse cultural heritage and preserve and revitalize the livability of our nation’s communities. Preservation planning grants from this fund range from $2,500 to $10,000 and require a dollar-for-dollar match.

If you have a project that might qualify get started on the application because the application deadline for some of the Trust’s most popular grant programs have changed and are now due May 1, 2013

On another note, if you’ve ever been involved with a National Historic Preservation Act’s Section 106 review process you might be interested to learn that the Council on Environmental Quality(CEQ) and the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation(ACHP) have teamed up to create a new handbook to help guide the integration of CEQ Regulations and Section 106.   These regulations are viewed as the cornerstones Federal environmental review procedures.  Hopefully this new handbook will help practitioners take advantage of opportunities to coordinate NEPA and Section 106 compliance procedures to improve these environmental reviews.  Click here to view the new handbook.
