MissPres News Roundup 11-29-2010

I was traveling most of this last week, but thanks to the internet was able to keep tabs on preservation news. Believe it or not, December is approaching and so are holiday events in and around historic districts and buildings around the state.  I’m sure that Malvaney will put these (and any other events) up … Continue reading »

MissPres News Roundup 11-22-2010

Happy Thanksgiving week everyone!  Even though we skipped a week for the News Round-Up so Malvaney could catch us up on the blogging world, I’ve been keeping up with the news from around the state.  As you’ll see, the Coast was apparently the place to be for preservation news the past couple of weeks. And … Continue reading »

Corinth and the Limitations of the MDAH

This is the second of two posts on Corinth regarding this situation; the first post was published yesterday. Corinth, a place apart from the rest of Mississippi, on the periphery, in the corner, in the farthest reaches. Corinth is Pluto, and Jackson is the Sun. In some ways, Corinth is not a part of Mississippi, … Continue reading »

MissPres News Roundup 11-8-2010

No big intro this week – let’s jump right into the news: The weekly papers covering Waynesboro and Water Valley have recently published stories about how each community is looking at establishing National Register Districts.  The meetings local officials have had in recent weeks with MDAH staff have been to talk about the National Register … Continue reading »

MissPres News Roundup 10-18-2010

I got back from my trip to Chattanooga yesterday (my “vacation” last week was a working one, just in case you think I’ve gotten too soft with two vacations in three months) and have to admit I wasn’t really looking forward to writing the news roundup in addition to catching up on all sorts of … Continue reading »

MissPres News Roundup 10-3-2010

I think it’s evidence of a long hot summer when 62 degrees feels like winter, but that’s where I am right now. On to the news . . . ——————————— It seems the on-going maintenance and renovation of the New Capitol in Jackson has some legislators expressing impatience. Imagine that! According to the Clarion-Ledger’s story … Continue reading »

Possible New Historic District Near Pass Christian

Last week the Department of Archives and History held a public meeting in the Pineville Community just north of Pass Christian to discuss a new historic district along Menge Avenue.  The meeting was held at Oak Crest on Menge Avenue, a 1920 two-story Neoclassical manor that now serves as a bed and breakfast and event space.  The name of the district would … Continue reading »

Demolition begins on Jackson’s Naval Reserve Center

Workers have been spotted at the Naval Reserve Center behind the Old Capitol in Jackson over the last week removing windows, interior debris, and sections of the rear wings in preparation for the demolition of most of the rear wings of this National Register-listed building. As we’ve noted before, this project will yield a records … Continue reading »

New Internet Resources for MissPresers

While lounging around on vacation last week, and when not sitting on the white sandy  beaches (NO OIL!!) of Northwest Florida (this has been a non-paid advertisement for the Gulf Coast tourism industry), I had a chance to catch up on some new internet sites that might of interest to avid MissPresers and non-avid MissPresers … Continue reading »
