Vacation Postcards: Marine Life, Gulfport

MissPres is on vacation this week, but we’re sending postcards back from Mississippi’s past.

MARINE LIFE ON THE BEACH, Gulfport, Mississippi. Entrance to fabulous Marine Life where there is action every minute. Here, through large picture windows you see many wonders of the sea, as divers descend before your eyes to feed and play with the hundreds of marine specimens--educated porpoises--entertaining seals--giant sea turtles--and many other squatic actors of the deep.

  1. MARINE LIFE will be sorely missed. It opend in 1956 and weathered Hurricane Camille in 1969 but, unfortunately couldn’t recover from Katrina. The storm surge was so high eight dolphins swam out of their tank – the largest in the world !

  2. Don Jacobs was a remarkable promoter of Marine Life and his other attractions on the Coast and, in the last months of his life, was officially recognized as the “Father of Gulf Coast Tourism.” Who can forget that every check that went out of Marine life was stamped in red letters, “These are Tourist Dollars.” However, although the Marine Life tanks were big, they were not the largest in the world.
