Just a quick photo update of the White House Hotel. The exterior work appears to have come a far piece since our last update three months ago. It is awesome to see the historic windows retained!

Goodness someone call Cindy Hyde-Smith because the weight and measure of those capitals are waaay off. Maybe it will be less obvious with a coat of paint on the columns. Oh well maybe the capitals will be the only victim of the next hurricane.
Overall the building looks great! Today it is hard to remember that it looked so bad for so long. I am looking forward for a chance to view the interior.

Thanks for this photo update of a project we’ve all been crossing our fingers for! Tha columns overall do appear fatter than the originals, but perhaps as you say, it’s a visual misperception that will be corrected by paint. Let’s hope.

You are welcome. I dont see the scale of the columns being off as much as I do the capitals, which almost look cartoonish in person. The new columns might have no taper or less of a taper than the original columns.

Is it possible that the larger capitals have been used intentionally for structural reasons?

No. The parts that are larger are the decorative exterior elements. Any structure would be carried from the column itself likely by a steel beam.

I have to wonder about the color of the shaft of the columns. Isn’t it supposed to be white? They do appear a bit chunky.

Hey this isn’t white pillars, that’s down the road! Just Kidding. The yellowish color you see is just the raw, unpainted color of whatever composite material (cement board, fiberglass, etc.) that the replacement columns are made from.

I was under the impression those columns had been salvaged? But these are wholly new?

The columns and capitals on the west colonnade are brand new replacements. The columns and capitals on the 1927 addition (on the east end) are original to that date of construction.

On news today, notice given they will be accepting employment applications later this week at the Beau Rivage for staffing the White House. So wonderful.
