E.L., I’m curious about J.R. and promise 2 get 2 the bottom of his ID. He might b John P. Taylor, Treasurer of Mississippi a few years later. Michelle at the library checked the city directory 4 1914-6 and this man was a resident of the Royal Hotel and it might b a typo. We will eyeball the document. The subject file at MDAH only has a John P, with no file 4 a J.R. More later.

You’re right–by today’s standards it’s as racist as it can be. By the standards of that day, it wasn’t even mildly incorrect, it was just the way pretty much most white people thought about the recent history of the state. Either way, political incorrectness wasn’t the right phrase–maybe I just shouldn’t have put a warning.
