Bethel Presbyterian Church, Claiborne County

Bethel Presbyterian Church, Claiborne County – (1828-30) (National Register). Bethel Presbyterian Church is an early vernacular Greek Revival church, one of the many beautiful, historic churches dotting the formerly populous rural countryside in Jefferson and Claiborne Counties. Bethel Church is an interesting vernacular expression of Greek Revival, a small stuccoed brick church combining Doric-type brick pilasters with pseudo-gothic window hood moulds. The interior does not match the Greek Revival exuberance of the façade, with much of the original fabric lost due to damage caused by a 1943 tornado and historically inappropriate repairs.
